Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

IME it varies by person, but it also varies by the protag in question. there have been a lot of really terrible warriors of light here, so a lot of people tend to dislike them on principle, but i don't think you'd get the same reaction playing shepard or durge, for instance.

can you expand on the terrible warriors of light? i'm completely canon blind to ffxiv.

da, but in ffxiv the warrior of light is literally the chosen one and can theoretically max out every job in the game (as opposed to picking one and rolling alts for the others), and there's a tendency among some players to incorporate everything they've done in-game into their ocs; so if someone's not great at oc-building, their wol can end up a master murder machine who's also a brilliant healer who's also indestructible and also runs the world's best forge-bakery-tailor shop-woodworking studio-greenhouse

IMO it's a bit more to do with the way the story works in 14. It's very much a chosen one narrative, and places very few characterization limits. But also it draws a lot of npcs and story events towards the player character in a way that only makes sense as them being the big important main character. As an mmo story, it's fun to play and engaging, but as a source material for characterization it provides too few boundaries and too much rule of cool for the player character. also imo it makes life hard for non-wol npc players who don't already know that WoL.

Yeah, this is the main issue. Any endgame RPG character can be a godlike master chef, but XIV also has all its major NPCs love the PC in a way that can easily be read as romantic, and a few have a guilt complex for always sticking the PC with the most dangerous and traumatizing tasks all the time so they constantly express deep concern over the PC and are always thinking about them. The game writing is also really good at making you, the player, really care about your PC.

So while WoLs can be played well, it is really easy for not so good players to exploit them for easy ships in casts, try to make them the main character of the game, and get huffy about WoL not being loved enough (or god forbid questioned) by castmates and non-castmates. Especially when XIV is uniquely good at making you fall in love with your blank slate, so it's easy to get self-inserting and no IC/OOC boundaries. They can really be Bad RPer Catnip.

OP of question

thanks so much for answering all. i actually was considering playing a wol casually in memes but was hitting the wall on how to handle them. i was down to making only two jobs canon (and maybe a single related disciple of hand, like ninja and blacksmith to fix their own blades) because being good at every single thing seemed a bit much to me. but yeah i agree with this being an issue. it's an issue in ffxiv rp in-game as well.

Honestly? Throw out the game content you've completed and just start from building a character and what skills make sense from the standpoint of a character and backstory you'd want to play. Personally I'd consider just making a FF14 OC who isn't the WoL at all, but that's just because I think chosen one narratives are boring

no you're right i was thinking of throwing out the wol stuff, making him one of those random combatants you pull with the azem crystal. i was messing around with the idea of him having an ancient shard too but i don't need to be the wol for that either.

not to burst your bubble, I'm just a highly jaded in-game rper and I don't rp 14 on dreamwidth. but the moment I see anything about an ancient in an FF14 oc I get wary. people who focus on ancient stuff have a really high hit rate for being fucking weird about emet-selch and/or hythlodaeus.

if it assuages your concerns i actually don't care for emet-selch and/or hythlodaeus. i'm only using the ancient stuff as a contributing factor as to why he's so focused on what he does (fighting). it's another reason why not making him a wol thus not making him azem appeals to me. i find the entire ancient-obsessed side of the fandom obnoxious.
