+1 to utena, with the caveat that i wouldn't recommend watching the movie without watching the anime, i don't think it stands on its own well enough. the show is a banger though and has a whole buffet of toxic/unhealthy lesbians

I agree that the series is stronger, but I actually watched the movie first and completely fell in love with it (with the stunning visuals and soundtrack doing some heavy lifting). Tbh I'm glad I did, because it allowed me to appreciate a couple of the Very Different character interpretations for what they were without getting confused/distracted or disappointed by them

huh! that sounds like an interesting way to go about it, and i mean it genuinely, no sarcasm; i'm trying to imagine what my takeaway would be from the movie if i hadn't seen the series first and i genuinely have no idea. i completely agree though that the visuals are absolutely stunning, and the character/relationship interpretations are way different than the series but still interesting in their own right (even though i wish they had gotten more room to breathe and get established better -- but that's the downside of a movie vs a 39 ep series)
