Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

If you use American English IRL but write a character who uses British English (or vice versa!) how much do you focus on spelling in your tags? Do you use the character's preferred English across the board (in their narrative, in their speech or texts) or not?

Just curious about general preferences.

TIA!

Legibility is more important than authenticity. Also with the advent of the internet the gap between American and British English are practically non-existent in writing--it's things like colour vs. color, whether to stick a period before or after the quotation marks, idioms, etc.

(Unless you're RPing a character from a place with its own peculiar vernacular, like Glasgow)

TBQH as someone who's been there the differences are most notable in spoken accents. No real way to signify that in RP beyond, "He said in a British accent." So do whatever.

i tend to write narrative in the "voice" of a character, so for example if my character is british (i am american) i will still call things by their BrE names in brackets (lift vs elevator, etc). i use american spelling generally, but i will use british spelling in text posts if appropriate.

i am also really interested in linguistics so this is probably unusual lol

I've done similar for characters whose regional vernacular / linguistic quirks I'm comfortable with / confident I can pull off! With some I'll also even use sentence constructions (i.e. s-v order and phrasings and stuff) that like, are still fine and make perfect sense in English, but are definitely a nod to a kind of construction more common in the other language (this is mostly informed by my own experience with being ESL, ftr; I'm fluent or at least I like to think I am but I definitely catch myself going 'wait is it phrased this way in English or what' sometimes).

I'm a Canadian playing a character from the USA, so I try very hard to make sure I use the USA spelling for his text posts and narration that is in the character's voice.

But I don't write out their accent. Ever.

I would focus on regionalisms more than spelling. There's the main stuff like trunk/boot, elevator/lift, cookie/biscuit etcetera (also the UK has so many interesting cookies/biscuits). But particular regions like Yorkshire, Cornwall, etc have their own terms and even syntax. So you can check out how real people from your character's region comstruct sentences.

Or you could pick up some Redwall books and go full Brian Jacques on the accents but most people don't like reading that outside of Redwall.
