the masses thirst for the smallest drop of wank

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

you'd have to be pretty unaware not to see this type coming from a mile away tho

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
and we had people up-thread whining about why people give excuses like "I'm busy" instead of giving honest crit. yall that shit works out BAD. better to just coast and ghost.

ayrt's ayrt ("the drawn medium isn't diegetic" anon)

i have to disagree that this is inherently a result of people being "very visual." to the contrary, i am myself an extremely visual person (in fact i struggle to get into shows and video games where i dislike the visual style), and these days i have even run in rp circles where icons used as "reaction shots" are common in more lighthearted threads. (yes i enjoy actionspam as a break from my brain's rictus perfectionism when it comes to long-form writing; sue me.)
that is: i am no stranger to using icons as a form of expression and story telling!

it definitely does not mean i am locked to picturing characters as looking exactly like they do in their icons, or imagining some kind of mixed media collage when a video game character interacts with a drawn character and a LA character.

idk, maybe there is simply an awkward gap that people can fall into where they want to reference the visual but can't get their brain to make adjustments? i simply think that this is an issue that can genuinely be overcome with a bit of practice, as long as people are willing to give cross-medium a chance!

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 maybe it's the years of visualizing/daydreaming that makes this easy for me

in cross-medium threads i pick one medium and apply it to both characters

the thought of visualizing both simultaneously never occurred to me. it wouldn't appeal to me either, so i at least get that part

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
unrelated tangent anon but

i didn't find out until i was a grown ass adult that other people are literally and not just figuratively out there seeing pictures in their imaginations

it sounds exhausting

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
never thought i'd see sour grapes-posting about… [checks notes] not having aphantasia.

just like i know that having aphantasia makes you no less creative, anon, surely you can appreciate that having a visual component to my imagination does not mean i'm suffering from some kind of constant sensory overload!
mental images are no more inherently exhausting than any other kind of thought, or than stuff like listening to instrumental music while reading a book.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
weirdly hostile response. what exactly was sour grapes about that comment?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm exhausted

but it ain't from imagining things. daydreaming is how i fall asleep most nights.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
da. doesn't read as hostile at all tbh

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
anon you can just say that aesthetics are a thing to you and leave it at that, it's definitely not that deep.

some ppl prefer drawn pbs and shows and stuff. it's normal. the crew in here keep sounding nerdy about it but that's (for the most part) all it's about.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
why don't you just check wikicon on insanejournal and here instead? That's the easiest way to find la icons.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
idk maybe i am just in a grouchy mood; just felt like the "exhausting" was characterizing visual imagination as a negative experience.

still, i did intend for the rest of the reply to come off more friendly/light-hearted.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
no one is telling them that how they feel is wrong tho. its what theyre saying about how OTHER people feel thats dumb as hell.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
aphantasia!anon ig

sorry, i didn't mean 'exhausting' to be negative or accusatory or anything, literally just that i feel like i'd get tired if my version of imagining became as intense as other people describe theirs

it's def probably not tiring when it's the norm

tbh listening to music while reading also sounds unpleasantly distracting to me lol

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
this

"la makes me uncomf because i just don't care for it" = whatever

"la makes me uncomf because (extended tale about how it's morally bad because the actors might google up people being weird about them, & you must be ok with this if you don't care about this)" = did you really have to imply that everyone ok with la therefore must have no morals about the plight of actors having a presence on the internet

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed. i used to play LA and might again, but prefer not to mix it with cartoon/anime/game chars bc it just seems off to me personally bc it's kinda random. that's literally the extent of it. love to see ppl writing together from both mediums, just isn't my personal vibe.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
at the risk of worsening this tangent, a lot of visual thinkers never realize word-thinking people constantly have a "voice" in their head.

neat thing: people who have an internal monologue move their larynx along with their inner "voice." reading and counting silently also create this kind of sub-vocalization. you're moving your larynx ever so slightly right now, as you read this.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
jfc why would you point that out

why

aaaaahhhhh

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
fuck now i'm aware of my larynx

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
disturbing, yes, but since the movements can be detected via EEG and matched to real phonemes that make up spoken language, it can be used to provide synthetic "speech" to people who've lost or damaged their vocal chords.

pretty sure i’ve written my last tag as of a week or two ago.

nothing drastic, i just don’t have motivation to start any new threads or post top-levels anymore, and everything i had going got dropped.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-21 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
fwiw anon i have hyperphantasia and while it isn't normally exhausting in the way you described it can become exhausting when i'm not doing it on purpose (i.e. hyperphantasia around an intrusive thought)

so you aren't wrong to think it could be exhausting, but since most people are somewhere inbetween aphantasia and hyperphantasia, I think they're not usually that bothered by it.
