This is really sweet to read and much more reassuring after seeing the earlier kind of nasty anons who sounded like they were just keeping quiet not to be accused of racism or whatever, but always hated honorifics...

For Japanese characters of mine who use them in canon, I let them keep them in rp, unless the implication's they're speaking English, so then I just have them to switch to "Mr."/"Ms." or equivalents, especially if it's IC for my character to be bilingual or multilingual! Sometimes, the dub comes with a canonical equivalent and I try to use that. ^^

Thank you for appreciating languages and learning more about them. If words like sensei can be adopted into English, I can't see why the rest can't be kept. It's a lovely way to learn more about different cultures and languages and the hierarchy and relationship development between characters.

Even a kid's anime like Pokemon had similar development: Shuu (Drew) used to always call Haruka (May) "Haruka-kun" when he saw himself as her senpai/upperclassman and her as his kouhai/underclassman when she was still a newbie at Pokemon Contests. He used to rub it in and act condescending, likely immaturely disguising a crush (he'd gift her roses and claim they're for her Pokemon Beautifly, not her)... after she saved his life when he nearly drowned, he dropped the "-kun" and addressed her as "Haruka" from then on... as an equal! We later her from another Pokemon Coordinator who's known him since his first Pokemon Contest that he cried after his first Pokemon Contest loss exactly like she did. And that he used to tell her about all sorts of things, but later on, he only talked about Haruka... ;3;
